FAQ

FAQS

Here are answers to some common questions.

  • Do I need a referral for physical therapy?

No, Wisconsin is a direct access state which means you do not need a referral to attend physical therapy. Physical therapists are highly trained in screening patients to know if/when patients will need to be referred to other providers.

  • What insurances does Innovative PT and Wellness accept?

    a. Innovative PT and Wellness is a private pay clinic which means it does not accept any insurance. For those patients with private commercial insurance with out of network coverage, they can submit their receipts with their insurer to try for reimbursement of services. There is no guarantee that there will be reimbursement from the insurer. The clinic is out of network for all insurance plans.

    b. Medicare patients: Please contact the clinic for further information. Innovative PT is not enrolled in any medicare plans.

    c. Currently, this clinic cannot accept patients with Medicaid or Tricare insurance due to federal regulations that limit the patient from accessing care outside of in plan providers.

  • Why doesn’t Innovative PT accept insurance?

    a. Many deductibles and copays continue to increase for healthcare coverage. For patients who haven’t met their deductible or have a high copay, many pay less out of pocket costs at Innovative PT for their treatments than they would going to a clinic that accepts their insurance.

    b. By avoiding the regulations of insurance companies, patients are able to get the care the need, when they need it, without limitations on the number of visits or the treatments that can be provided.

    c. Because the functional manual therapy approach looks at how the body works as a system, areas treated that could be causing the symptoms may be at a location where the patient isn’t experiencing the pain. We are able to address and treat those areas without worry of insurance denying the visit because of treating an area outside of the diagnosis code.

  • What payments are accepted?

    • Cash
    • Check
    • Credit cards
    • FSA or HSA cards
  • What is a certified functional manual therapist (CFMT)?

A physical therapist who has had the drive and determination to achieve what a select few PTs have achieved. CFMT is achieved through years of studying, attending courses, traveling, lab assisting, sacrificing time and events with family, and the extra monies spent to prepare to sit for the week long testing. Testing consists of 10 written, oral, and lab practical (hands on) examinations.

Dr. Trista Larson passed CFMT with honors in 2020.

  • What is Functional Manual Therapy ® (FMT)?

It is a 3 pillar approach to patient care developed by the Institute of Physical Art (IPA) utilizing specialized manual therapy, body mechanics training, and prescriptive exercise.

  • Can I submit claims to my insurance for reimbursement?

For commercial (non medicare plans): Innovative PT is out of network for all insurance plans. If you have out of network coverage, you can submit your claims for possible reimbursement. No guarantees are provided regarding any reimbursement.

For Medicare patients: Innovative PT is not enrolled as a medicare provider. Medicare has specific regulations regarding medicare patients and where they can seek care. If a patient wishes to go through Medicare, there are several hospital systems and private practices that accept Medicare patients and will bill medicare for reimbursement. If you do want to go through Medicare, we can help you find a good provider in your area. Because Innovative PT is not a participating medicare provider, we can only accept patients who do not want Medicare billed for any PT services.

  • How is Innovative PT different from other physical therapy clinics?

All patients are assessed using a manual therapy based, holistic, systems approach. When looking for the underlying cause of your pain, the primary problem may not be where the patient is feeling the pain. It’s through the specialized palpation and manual therapy skills that the PT is able to identify the source of the pain. The therapist then works together with the patient to develop and implement a personalized treatment program. The patient is an active participant in their recovery during treatment and with implementing their home programs and changes to their mechanics, lifestyle, and postures.

You will receive one on one treatments with a highly skilled, certified functional manual therapist (1 of only 20 in the state of WI).

We offer more than traditional PT. We use advanced manual therapy techniques, look at how the body moves as a system, provide nutritional education, lifestyle management, and pain science education.

  • What should I wear to my appointments?

Loose fitting clothing should be worn or brought to appointments. If it is an upper body problem, patient’s should wear a tank top or T shirt. For a leg or low back issue, patients should bring a pair of shorts to their appointment. Shorts are provided at the clinic if needed.

  • How long are appointments?

The first appointment is the initial evaluation which lasts about 60 minutes. This includes getting a patient’s history, physical examination, setting goals, and typically has time to include treatment.

When patients return for follow up, their appointments can range from 45-60 minutes in length.
